Gardening Leads To A Healthier, Happier Life.
When I am in my garden weeding or planting, I am at peace with the world. I find enormous satisfaction and pleasure to be out in the fresh air with only the birds and the bees, (and hopefully butterflies) to keep me company.
Gardening makes you feel good, and it positively does you good, physically, spiritually and mentally. Trees for instance, are the lungs of pollution as they convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, and I know that the British Urban Forestry Unit is trying very hard to increase the number of trees in towns and cities.
I was never very good at growing vegetables, flowers were more my area of expertise, but I must admit that when my gardening friend and avid organic gardener, talked me into creating a “veggie” garden, I was quite amazed at how pleasing it was to see my hard work appear on the kitchen table for my families consumption!
For many thousands of years, plants have been used for medicinal purposes and the resurgence of herbal gardening is now in full swing. I think we have become so concerned about additives put in our food, and the side-effects of drugs that we are now taking more responsibility for our own health. This fact alone is a very positive sign that we are becoming more interested in holistic medicine, hopefully understanding that mind, body and spirit are forever linked.
So instead of taking over the counter medication, take some herbs and make a delicious pot of tea! Gardening also works all the muscle groups, and I can personally vouch that it gives the heart and lungs a great workout. I did read that men and women both burn more calories per minute digging than they do cycling. In reward for all that hard work, there is a beautiful garden full of flowers or produce, to take away the aches and pains.
Overall the quality of life is greatly improved, by getting out the spade or garden fork, putting on your old gardening clothes and getting “down and dirty!”
