Building soil begins with evaluation of the current soil status. Ideally you should have your soil tested. After tests are run, you'll likely learn of what it lacks. Among the elements that may be lacking are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

You may need to amend your soil with element organic fertilizers. These can be purchased at most lawn and garden stores. These are usually sold by the bag - each bag containing one or two ingredients.

The addition of organic matter will also be quite beneficial to your soil. The use of animal manure or compost materials will do the trick. Once the organic matter has been added the soil will prove to drain better. In addition, water retention will significantly improve.

Various forms of fertilizer should prove beneficial as well. Again a variety of fertilizers can be found at your local lawn and garden store. A combination of fertilizer, compost, and organic matter should prove to do wonders for your garden.

In the event that you lack any garden experience, don't be afraid to call on the experts. The experts may come in the form of a landscape company that will essentially do the bulk of the work or you may seek to obtain advice from your local garden store.

Don't be fooled - developing and maintaining good soil can be a bit of a challenge. It will definitely take some work. It will definitely take some time. And it will most certainly require some serious know how. However, all of your efforts will be well worth the trouble when your garden is the pride of the neighborhood.
